The Perak Winery
Wine with quality and experience
About Winery
The Perak Winery vineyards are located in Kutjevo’s wine region on the southern slopes of Krndija, between Kutjevo and Vetovo, in the heart of Slavonija.
Positioned at the altitude ranging from 220m to 300m and in the diameter from three up to seven kilometres, they stretch over the finest area of Kutjevo’s wine region comprising Mitrovac, Lukac and Vetovo.
Over 60% of the wines produced at Perak Winery are premium quality and the rest are quality wines.
The creator of the finest premium quality wines is Mr Ivica Perak, oenologist, born in Kutjevo into a family with a long tradition of tending vineyards and making wines and of overall agricultural production.
At present, Perak Winery boasts of twelve hectares of privately owned vineyards. The oldest vines date back to 1968, whereas the latest were planted in 2014. Since Graševina (Welschriesling variety) is indigenous with Croats, primarily in Slavonia, it is planted on 70% of the vineyards’ area among wide selection of vintages and varieties.
Graševina (Welschriesling variety) is the basis of the Perak Winery production for it has proved the ability to yield various quality wines from dry quality through premium quality to predicate wines. Besides, there are other sorts of white grapes: Pinot Gris, Rhine Riesling, Yellow Muscat, Chardonnay, Traminer, and Sauvignon Blanc.
As far as red grape varieties are concerned, we should mention Zweigeltrebe, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. At the time, quality and premium quality Graševina, together with premium quality Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are on the market as well as Rose, Red Cuvee as quality wines and Merlot as premium quality wine among red varieties.
"We are particularly proud of the Graševina Icewine 2015 vintage."
The quality of our wines is best acknowledged by numerous medals and recognitions awarded and granted at both domestic and international fairs and competitions: county competitions, regional competitions, Graševina Festival in Kutjevo, international competitions in Maribor, BonaVita in Trnava, Gast Fair in Split.
The History of Viticulture and Oenology in Kutjevo’s Wine Region
Roman Age
Favourable climate and agreeable natural conditions of gentle and sunny southern slopes of Krndija and Papuk have been attracting people to the region of Kutjevo and its surroundings since the Stone and Bronze Age, as historical evidence shows. It is also known that vine has been planted on these hillsides from time immemorial.
1232
The first written document dates back to 1232, when the Cistercians arrived in the area and founded the abbey known as Abbatia Beatissimiae Virginis Mariae Vallis honesta de Gotho. The monks established a feudal estate, built a church, monastery and workshops. Thus, this period can be said to mark the beginning of viticulture in the area since the Cistercians of Kutjevo were not only spreading and strengthening the faith and moral norms, they were also educating common people and developing agriculture, particularly viticulture. Their industrious activities secured them enormous recognition and thus, throughout the whole Middle Ages, this area and the Požeška Valley were referred to as Vallis Honesta or "the Honourable Valley".
1529
When the Turks invaded the region, the Cistercians abandoned the abbey in 1529. They left the church, the monastery and the workshops, but also advanced agricultural production, particularly viticulture and winemaking they had taught to people. The estate they left has been the framework of development of this area through all times up to now.
Nowadays
Since those times, viticulture and oenology have been at a high-quality level despite the tumultuous periods they experienced from the Turkish invasion, Jesuit period and early capitalism at the beginning of the 20th century, through the period of socialism up to present days.
All 55 kilometres of Kutjevo Vineyards on the southern slopes of Krndija and Papuk lie on the famous 45.3 parallel and are considered to be among the best vineyards in Croatia and outside its borders. Considering its rich winemaking tradition, the size of the vineyards’ area, the champion titles and medals won at national and international competitions, highly qualified and acknowledged professionals, registered winemakers and the capacities of wine cellars. the town of Kutjevo deserves to be recognised as "The Croatian Capital of Wine" and "The World Capital of Graševina".
